Sept. 21st - 24th

 Looking Back:

Hello families! It was a short but busy week in grade one. Thank you for coming to visit the school and our classroom during our open house on Thursday evening. It was lovely meeting with all of you! Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together:

For literacy this week, we focused on the letter ‘i’. We learned that this letter is a vowel and that we can make many three letter words with this vowel sound in the middle. We practiced reading and writing words such as big, pig, sit, him, pit etc.

In math we continued our learning with printing and representing numbers to 10. Our daily calendar routine incorporates representing numbers in multiple ways, such as building with tens and ones, ten frames, and tally marks. Can you believe we are already at day 18 of school?

We celebrated the first day of fall on Tuesday. Students spent some reflective time outside as we learned more about the season of fall. Each student practiced finding a sit spot to quietly observe and draw a fall tree.

On Wednesday our whole school participated in the Terry Fox run. It was a great day filled with smiles, determination, and lots of fun! Thank you to everyone for your donations.

This year we will be talking about the Seven Grandfather teachings which are the basic values important to some indigenous groups. There are seven core values that are represented by an animal. Our focus this month has been on courage which is represented by the bear.

We were so proud of our self-portrait art projects and hope you had a chance to look at them during our open house! We read a story called “The Colours of Us” that talked about how we all have different shades of skin. We then chose the paper we wanted to use for our shade and followed a directed drawing to complete our portrait. We then used ripped paper to create the hair and added important colour details to create our final masterpiece!

Looking Ahead:

Orange Shirt Day

This week, students will spend time reflecting on the meaning of Orange Shirt Day.

Classroom activities throughout the week will include age-appropriate activities related to Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural significance.

On Tuesday September 29, staff and students are encouraged to wear thier Orange Shirts.

The grade 3 classes will be leading the Orange Shirt Day Assembly on Tuesday, September 29.  The assembly will start at 9:30.  Parents are welcome to attend.
