Sept.14th - 18th

 Looking Back:

On Monday we had a special visitor for our 10th day of school! It was Zero the Hero who loves the number 0. We learned that he will come every ten days and bring us a fun activity. This week he brought some beads and pipe cleaners. We first practiced representing the number 10 on a ten frame and then we put our beads on a pipe cleaner to make a bracelet. We are very excited for him to come back. Ask your child if they know what day he will be back again!

On Tuesday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then decorated our own dot with creative designs. Each dot will be hung up in the school to create a collaborative art piece!

In literacy this week, we focused on the letter /a/. We practiced sounding out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that had the /a/ sound in the middle. (Ex. cat, fat, mat).

In our printing books, we continued to practice letter formation for the "downer" letters and have completed l,i,t, and f. We will move on to "rounder" letters next week.

In gym we went on our first community walk together! It was lovely to be outside and we had fun trying to see how many Canada flags we could spot along the way!

Looking Ahead:

Community Walks in PE

Starting Wednesday, September 16th, we will be introducing a regular community walk routine as part of our PE classes. These walks will provide students with an opportunity to be active, get outside, and enjoy our school community.
Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on walk days. Parents will be notified at least 48 hours in advance whenever a community walk is planned.
If you are interested in volunteering to help with community walks, please note that an updated police clearance is required every year. Our Parent Council Volunteer Coordinator has sent out a Sign-Up Genius for those interested in volunteering.

Terry Fox Run

MTS Terry Fox run will take place on Wednesday, September 23 at 9:00 am.

We encourage students to bring in a toonie for Terry. Our fundraising goal is $1200, which is approximately a toonie for every student and staff member in the school.

Mr. V is in need of 5-8 volunteers for each grade to make it a successful event.  Volunteers will be asked to help mark students' hands (so they can track their laps), and help with clean-up afterwards. Volunteers will be needed from 8:45am – 10:00am.

For parents and guardians who have completed their Annual Volunteer Clearance, you will receive a Sign-Up Genius from the MTSPA Volunteer Co-Ordinator.

MTS Open House

McKenzie Towne School will be hosting an Open House for students and their families on Thursday September 24. Doors will be open at 5:00pm.

This will give you an opportunity to meet your student's teacher and see the school.

Mrs. McLean, our lovely librarian, will also be hosting a Book Sale in the library.

If you are interested in attending this informal event, please feel free to pop into the school any time between 5:00pm and 6:30pm.

Hope to see you there!

Fun Lunch

Fun Lunch will start on Wednesday September 23. You will have until September 18th to register for the first lunch.

Change of Clothes

A number of students have been needing a change of clothes throughout the day.

Please make sure to pack an extra pair of pants in your child's backpack.

If any families have small pants that they could donate, the office would be happy to take them.

Orange Shirt Day

Between September 21-29, students will spend time reflecting on the meaning of Orange Shirt Day.

Classroom activities throughout the week will include age-appropriate activities related to Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural significance.

On Tuesday September 29, staff and students are encouraged to wear thier Orange Shirts.

The grade 3 classes will be leading the Orange Shirt Day Assembly on Tuesday, September 29.  The assembly will start at 9:30.  Parents are welcome to attend.
