  Looking Back:  This week in Grade 1, we spent time reviewing the short vowel sounds for a, i, and o. Students practiced reading and writing words with these vowel sounds and continued building their confidence as beginning readers and writers. In math, we explored teen numbers by representing them with ten frames and tally marks. We also had fun conducting a class survey and using tally marks to collect and record data. Students enjoyed seeing how math can help us organize information and answer questions. We began a new science unit on investigations! We discussed what an investigation is and shared things we are curious about and would like to learn more about. The class was full of great questions and excited thinkers. As part of our literacy learning, we read The Thankful Book by Todd Parr. After discussing the story, students reflected on the things they are thankful for and completed a journal writing activity beginning with, "I am thankful for...". We also met with ...

Happy October! Looking Back:  Good-bye September and Hello October! It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 5 weeks. Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together:  On Tuesday, we participated in our Orange Shirt Day assembly and spent time learning about the importance of remembering and honouring the experiences of Indigenous children and families. We also read Shi-shi Etko and reflected on our own special memories by creating memory bags filled with important people, places, and experiences from our lives. In literacy, we learned how to correctly print the letter e and focused on the short vowel sound o . We also worked hard to learn and recognize our new heart word, "the." Students continued building their reading and writing skills through a variety of engaging activities and have brought home a completed worksheet about our new heart word.
