Happy October!

Looking Back: 

Good-bye September and Hello October! It is hard to believe that we have been in school for 5 weeks. Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together: 

On Tuesday, we participated in our Orange Shirt Day assembly and spent time learning about the importance of remembering and honouring the experiences of Indigenous children and families. We also read Shi-shi Etko and reflected on our own special memories by creating memory bags filled with important people, places, and experiences from our lives.

In literacy, we learned how to correctly print the letter e and focused on the short vowel sound o. We also worked hard to learn and recognize our new heart word, "the." Students continued building their reading and writing skills through a variety of engaging activities and have brought home a completed worksheet about our new heart word. See if they can read you the sentence they wrote!  We also completed more pages in our colour books by finishing the sentence, "This is an orange ___," and illustrating three orange objects.

We had a very exciting visit from Zero the Hero as we celebrated our 20th day of school! He brought us a fun graphing activity that helped us practice collecting and organizing information using coloured blocks. 

To finish the week, we explored the beautiful colours of fall. We discussed how nature changes during the season and added our observations to our visual journals. Students coloured a page in their journal using fall colours and different line techniques to show the many shades of autumn we can see around us.

Looking Ahead: 

Terry Fox Run Update

September 23 marked the day for our annual Terry Fox Run that is intended to raise awareness and funds in support of cancer research.

Through the generosity of the community, the school raised $1693.15.

As always, MTS families, showed their care and kindness for others in supporting this cause.

Welcome to Grade One!  Hello families! It has been a wonderful start to the school year. Sept.14th - 18th

  Looking Back:  On Monday we had a special visitor for our 10th day of school! It was Zero the Hero who loves the number 0. We learned that he will come every ten days and bring us a fun activity. This week he brought some beads and pipe cleaners. We first practiced representing the number 10 on a ten frame and then we put our beads on a pipe cleaner to make a bracelet. We are very excited for him to come back. Ask your child if they know what day he will be back again! On Tuesday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then decorated our own dot with creative designs. Each dot will be hung up in the school to create a collaborative art piece! In literacy this week, we focused on the letter /a/. We practiced sounding out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that had the /a/ sound in the middle. (Ex. cat, fat, mat).   Looking Back:  Hello families! It was a short but busy week in grade one. Thank you for coming to visit the school and our classroom during our open house on Thursday evening. It was lovely meeting with all of you! Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together:  For literacy this week, we focused on the letter ‘i’. We learned that this letter is a vowel and that we can make many three letter words with this vowel sound in the middle. We practiced reading and writing words such as big, pig, sit, him, pit etc. In math we continued our learning with printing and representing numbers to 10. Our daily calendar routine incorporates representing numbers in multiple ways, such as building with tens and ones, ten frames, and tally marks. Can you believe we are already at day 18 of school?
