Looking Back:  Hello families! It was a short but busy week in grade one. Thank you for coming to visit the school and our classroom during our open house on Thursday evening. It was lovely meeting with all of you! Here are some of the learning highlights from our week together:  For literacy this week, we focused on the letter ‘i’. We learned that this letter is a vowel and that we can make many three letter words with this vowel sound in the middle. We practiced reading and writing words such as big, pig, sit, him, pit etc. In math we continued our learning with printing and representing numbers to 10. Our daily calendar routine incorporates representing numbers in multiple ways, such as building with tens and ones, ten frames, and tally marks. Can you believe we are already at day 18 of school? We celebrated the first day of fall on Tuesday. Students spent some reflective time outside as we learned more about the season of fall. Each student practiced finding a ...

Looking Back:  On Monday we had a special visitor for our 10th day of school! It was Zero the Hero who loves the number 0. We learned that he will come every ten days and bring us a fun activity. This week he brought some beads and pipe cleaners. We first practiced representing the number 10 on a ten frame and then we put our beads on a pipe cleaner to make a bracelet. We are very excited for him to come back. Ask your child if they know what day he will be back again! On Tuesday we celebrated international dot day by reading a story called The Dot. We then decorated our own dot with creative designs. Each dot will be hung up in the school to create a collaborative art piece! In literacy this week, we focused on the letter /a/. We practiced sounding out CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that had the /a/ sound in the middle. (Ex. cat, fat, mat). In our printing books, we continued to practice letter formation for the "downer" letters and have completed l,i,t, and f. We w...

The first few weeks of school have been filled with excitement and new learning as teachers and students get to know everyone in their class. It has been such a pleasure getting to know your child over the last couple of weeks and I look forward to supporting them in their learning journey this year!  If you need to contact me for any reason, the best way is through email.   Mrs. Watson: kfwatson@cbe.ab.ca   Looking Back:  The past few weeks at school, we have been busy practicing new routines. Students are now familiar with their daily classroom routine, and have enjoyed getting to go outside for recess and lunch!  During literacy this week, we began reviewing letters through the UFLI program (University of Florida Literacy Institute). This program follows a specific scope and sequence to teach students skills necessary for proficient reading.  Students pract...
